Definitely A Winner!
I have been in the Health and Fitness field for 13 years as a Fitness Instructor, Personal Trainer and Health Club Director in NYC. Over the years I have seen many many books on the subjects of How to get in shape, How to build a better body, and How to start a work-out program etc. come over my desk. Jon Giswold's book, Basic Training for Men is head and shoulders above the rest. This book is intelligent and highly readable. It speaks to us as we need to hear the information, clearly and accurately, while anticipating then resoving any questions and excuses before we even hve time to realize they were there. I like this book because it takes you from A (out of shape, unmotivated, lost amongst an onslaught of conflicting information) to Z ( an understanding on how our fitness goals can be achieved with a step by step plan). Jon delivers this book in a way where we don't feel pressured, judged or overwhelmed but nurtured and supported on our journey to our ultimate fitness goals.

The Power of Knowledge
This book is a staple to any man inundated with the constant stream of misconceptions of what the male body should be. It is so hard to know where to begin amongst all the clothing ads, music videos, and movie stars.

For me, I was always daunted by the myriad of tanned-to-a-crisp hardbodies in speedos trying to sell me supplements, or the approach of extremely high-priced personal trainers. What was missing was my own knowledge of fitness. This book gives you the power of knowledge. Every part of this book, from the actual training to the lifestyle sections, provides a solid, basic knowledge of fitness that is practical.

Also, if you are a straight male who is slightly bothered by the hint of homoeroticism in the photographs, I urge you to grow up. The pictures are artistic and inspiring. They display a broad range of body types that, again, help the reader to expand his own knowledge.

Great book for beginners
I bought this book never having been to a gym, or doing any exercise. If you were the kid in PE that no one picked or find the exercise techniques and terminology confusing, this book is for you.
It also covers skin care and general health concerns. Definitely a book written by a gay man for gay men. It's great.
I started using his basic work out a week ago and already have noticed results. He also encourages you to work out alone if you want and tells you exactly what you need. He gives clear examples of the exercises with pictures.
I'm looking forward to reading his 2nd book!
