Excellent introduction book, requires in-person instruction
I was first introduced to the book in 1991. I have been able to use it subsequently in my professional endeavors (Information Technology) for the last 10 years. It has served as an excellent reference tool for working with programming teams on programming projects. The failure to use the precepts in this book (documentation) is one of the key reasons that approximately 85% of programming projects are over time, over budget, and don't meet project specifications.A previous reviewer's comments about the BASIC/COBOL language use is correct. The reason BASIC & COBOL were used is their similarity to standard language. Imagine if newbie programmers, with no exposure to C/C++, were taught using this book and the BASIC/COBOL examples were replaced by C++ or Java? Students would spend the majority of a four month class deciphering cryptic functions rather than grasping the underlying precepts of programming design

Not a readable or coherent instructional tool.
I am not at all a computer novice, but I found the book hard to follow, giving little instruction. It is also extremely outdated- the program code is in BASIC and COBOL, and it makes reference to punch cards. Yikes!

For the money I paid for this book, it was a bad investment
The book jumped all over and didn't flow too well. It was not a good instructional tool.
