A look at child/adolescent development
Writing this memoir probably helped the author make sense of her life. Her attempt here is to trace her development from her "boyish" pre-eighth grade years to the "womanish" woman she is today. She sees eighth grade as a pivotal time when Rutherford- her masculine side- was replaced by more traditionally feminine qualities. Thankfully, she does not bash her teachers, parents, nor society for this metamorphosis. On the contrary, she states that she "could have changed course at any moment." I was pleased to see she wasn't playing the blame game, faulting others for stifling her. She accepts responsibility for the person she has become, which is a positive message to send out to readers: that to a large extent, our choices shape who we are. This book would be an excellent choice for those interested in human development during the middle childhood/adolescent years.
