Oxfam on microfinance - read this one!
This excellent little handbook is a compact guide to the most important practical (and some of the philosophical) questions, debates and challenges in microfinance today. A tidy crash course on the topic, I read this book before starting an internship in a microfinance bank and was happily surprised to find that I could clearly understand and even critically interpret the practices of the bank, with little other specific background in the area. In fact, after browsing it, the bank manager wanted his own copy! Well-organized, helpful summaries. Also, since it is lightweight, it makes a good mini-reference for travellers with limited baggage space for books.
