Not just for Borderlines!
While struggling to comprehend a loved one's diagnosis of BPD, this volume offered me hands-down the most insightful, productive and forwards-oriented information on the disorder (and all addictive behaviors) I could find on the market. In contrast to some of the other popular informational BPD volumes out there (Kreisman's 'I Hate You, Don't Leave Me,' etc), I found Santoro's work to be packed with strategies, self-work exercises, and cognitive interventions that point the way towards the future, rather than reiterating the standard cliches about the hopelessly entrenched nature of this personality disorder.
His conceptual framework of working through various "zones" of recovery is a very handy paradigm in a field where much of the therapeutic literature is presented more statically.
'The Angry Heart' was the book that finally convinced the person with BPD in my life to seek appropriate therapeutic & psychopharmaceutical treatment, and this, in my lay opinion, is worth gold.
In addition, it is one of the few that also speaks to ADULT MEN who receive this diagnosis - there's a refreshing dearth of the unicorns and rainbows one sees in much of the other BPD self-help literature that's oriented towards younger women (who make up the majority population diagnosed with BPD in the USA at the moment). It's certainly not gender-limited, however.
As someone who runs a large resources web site on BPD, I have met a number of BPD sufferers who have used the program laid out in this volume with great success, either alone or in conjunction with professional counselling, and that anecdotal information really speaks for itself. Granted, this is not an easy read for Borderlines, and the program is tough - but if you stick with it, SO effective for creating real life change.
Excellent! If you have encountered BPD in any context in your life, I highly recommend The Angry Heart.
If you have a loved one with BPD, I strongly advise getting Kreger/Mason's 'Stop Walking on Eggshells' in conjunction with this book.

Full of Useful Informaion
I am amazed at the amount of information this book provides. Unlike other books on borderline personality disorder, this book has treatment aspect of the disorder. I think other books on the same subject had more descriptions of how bad the disorder is and don't even mention any treatment.

Recommended Understanding that the BPD is a Medical Disorder
I am the webowner of BPD Today. Very good information on working through issues. I recommend asking your therapist before reading this book as one must be ready. The author makes many good points and it appears that past trauma/abuse is related to the BPD.
Please understand however that this book does not address the need for medication in getting into recovery from the BPD. It is primarily a medical disorder. Otherwise it is loaded with assistance. Similar Products
