This is Self Help at Its BEST!
Ever felt like depression and negativitity were swamping all the happiness out of your life? Then read this book before you turn to Prozac. When I first found this book, back in 1997, I instantly recognized myself in Dr. Carlson's descriptions of the way thoughts can play through one's head and cause you to act in reactionary, emotional ways when one is experiencing what he calls a "low mood." He teaches readers, though, through a step by step process, how to return once again, to a state of "healthy psychological functioning." This book is NOT another "positive thinking" book. No, it is one of the most profound little books you'll ever pick up. It teaches you how to recognize "low moods" and to avoid action during low moods. It shows how to return to "normal functioning." After reading the book version several times a year for the last couple of years, I recently bought a two-tape audio version of this book, which is read by the author, and allows me to review the book's key principles whenever I feel a low mood setting in for too long. Not just a book. A great mental health tool.

I saw the light!
I've had the book for quite a while and just never thought that I had the time to pick it up. I was diagnosed with depression a little less than a year ago and find myself still having bouts with not being happy from time to time. And Dr. Carlson was so dead on ... it is all in your thoughts! I picked the book up last night and couldn't put it down ... it's the best so-called 'self-help' book I've ever read. He makes comments about how traditional therapy can tend to cause us more problems in the end -- and that was exactly my experience. He made me realize that thinking is simply a function we do one our own -- and that thinking can be seen as 'static.' I've never thought of it like that -- in 21 years I never realized that so many problems could be avoided by simply letting the thought slide away and not focusing on it. That's so simple, and yet so hard to do. I've been in a depressed mood for quite a while -- fighting with people I care about, because I'm thinking in an irrational mannor, and then come to regret it because I wasn't thinking clearly. Dr. Carlson wrote this book in a mannor that doesn't talk down to people, but instead uses the tone of a friend sitting down for coffee with you. He gives you examples and tells you about situations from his own life. Amazing -- I'll be reading this all summer just so that I can continue to remember these principles. The first time was to realize that these concepts existed and the second time will be to understand them and start to allow them to sink into my brain so that I can use them. Thinking doesn't have to run my life -- a break through! Thank you Dr. Carlson!

Excellant information, Dry presentation
I must admit the information in this program is exceptional. It brings to light common mistakes we all make in recognizing the differance between what is real and what is thought. Sadly the down side of this program is that the delivery of the information is dry and boring. Its actually hard to listen to more than one or two chapters at a time. I think you would be better served if you got the paperback book or if you really want to study this line of thinking on CD. try the CD's from Dr. Wayne Dyer. He keeps you up and motivated with a very well done presentation.
